On Saturday Feby. 27th. at 9 a.m. the Chief Officer sent me orders to attend

at the Shipping Office at 10.00 a.m.

On arrival there at that time I found the Chief Officer

had arrived before me and was in conversation with the

Shipping Master.

by the Shipping Master in a most angry manner and before

having an opportunity to speak, was asked by that official

if I was willing to return to the ship and do my duty.

On replying in the affirmative I was ordered out of the

office. The Chief Officer I concluded had misrepresent-

ed the case to him, before my arrival, and I was allowed

to give no explanation.

I went from the office directly on board the ship,

arriving there at 11.30 a.m.

At ... on that day by clean linen was brought

on board, and, not having received any money since

leaving Singapore, I sent the washerwoman to the Chief

Officer with a chit asking him to settle the account, which

he did. (I wish to show that the Chief

Steward can testify to the fact of my having returned to

the ship)

At 9 ... on Sunday ... I went to the Chief

Officer with two brass fittings which he had requested

me to obtain for the Steam-boat, I having previously

informed him I could obtain these fittings in Hong Kong.

Although he had ordered me to retain them, and also had said

he would pay for them, he now refused to accept them,

telling me to throw them overboard, saying that

... would ... like to knock me down. In reply, I informed

him there were two things he had yet to learn, one being ...
